Visit the Temple of Brunello: Museum and Wine Bar in Montalcino
Montalcino is not only a medieval village with timeless charm, but it is the cradle of one of the most famous and celebrated red wines in the world. If you are planning a holiday or a weekend dedicated to wine tourism in Val d’Orcia, there is a place in the heart of the historic center that you absolutely must include in your itinerary: the Temple of Brunello.
Housed within the former conventual and monumental complex of Sant’Agostino, the millenary and cultural heart of the city, this space is not a simple museum. It is a modern valorization project (called Oro di Montalcino) that uses the most innovative digital technologies to make visitors discover the visceral link between wine, history, archeology and the landscape of this generous land.
Let’s find out together what to see during the visit and how the exclusive internal wine shop works.
The journey inside the Tempio del Brunello develops through restored historical environments, where archeology meets digital technology. The visit is structured to fully understand the visceral connection between wine, the land of Montalcino and the people who produce it.
The visit to the Temple will also allow you to admire the complex’s rich collection of sacred art, famous for its “gold backgrounds” from the Sienese school, the wooden statues and the Etruscan finds in the archaeological section.
The itinerary can only end in the Enoteca del Tempio, located in the ancient uncovered cloister or in the adjacent rooms. It is the moment most awaited by visitors, where theory gives way to the glass.
Here you can sit down to sip aglass of Rosso or Brunello di Montalcino. Accompanying you in the tasting will be professional sommeliers supported by an innovative multilingual digital sommelier, a technological system that will guide you to discover the organoleptic characteristics, aromas and nuances of the different local labels.
The wine shop uses modern high-tech dispensers (WineEmotion) which allow you to taste a wide selection of Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino labels, including the prestigious reserves and different vintages of the consortium’s producers.
How does it work? Upon entry you will be provided with a rechargeable card. You can move independently between the dispensers, choose the label that intrigues you and select the desired quantity (a taste or a whole glass).
Tasting clusters: The wines are often divided by sub-areas or production styles, allowing you to take a real sensorial journey and grasp the nuances that the altitude, the soil and the exposure give to Sangiovese.
Where it is located: Sant’Agostino complex, Via Filippochi 16, right in the historic center of Montalcino (SI).
Why visit it: It is the ideal activity to start your stay, offering a complete overview of the area before leaving for tours of the individual cellars. Furthermore, being entirely covered in the internal rooms, it represents the perfect “day-saving” activity in case of rain or uncertain weather.
