Bike Routes in Montalcino and Val d’Orcia
The Val d’Orcia, with its rolling hills, a UNESCO heritage site, rows of cypress trees and legendary white roads, is one of the most desired destinations in the world for two-wheel lovers. Whether you are expert cyclists looking for challenging slopes, dirt and gravel enthusiasts, or travelers who prefer the assisted pedaling of a modern E-Bike, the area around Montalcino offers unique scenery and unforgettable routes.
Planning a cycling holiday in Tuscany means immersing yourself in generous nature and pedaling at the slow pace of the landscape. Let’s discover together the three most famous and fascinating cycling itineraries to follow during your stay.
Type: Gravel, Racing Bike (with suitable tyres), E-Bike
Surface: Asphalt and limestone white roads
Departure and arrival: Montalcino (Piazza Cavour / Fortezza)
Length: Approximately 46 km
Positive altitude difference: +950 meters
Difficulty: Medium / Challenging (requires good training if done with a muscle bike)
The main stops: Montalcino > Torrenieri > Lucignano d’Asso > Buonconvento > Bibbiano > Montalcino.
If the Eroica is the very famous event commemorating vintage cycling held in October, not everyone knows that its Permanent Route is open, signposted and accessible for free 365 days a year.
About 50% of the route winds along dirt roads with a compact limestone surface – the famous Tuscan “white roads” – within a large ring that crosses the heart of the province of Siena. One of its most spectacular and iconic stages touches the village of Montalcino, where the departure goes downhill towards Torrenieri following the old railway route, and then goes up among the vineyards offering spectacular views of the Val d’Orcia. You can test your legs on these legendary historic hills in any season, enjoying their timeless beauty and decidedly vintage atmosphere; just pay attention to the hardest stretch of the itinerary, i.e.the final ascent towards Montalcino from Bibbiano: a panoramic but demanding climb, with gradients that in some sections reach 10-12%.
It is the official route of the historic Mountain Bike competition that takes place every autumn. A technical, nervous route immersed in the Mediterranean scrub and the most prestigious vineyards.
Type: mountain bike (MTB), E-MTB (or E-Mountain Bike)
Base: dirt road, natural paths, local roads and dirt
Departure and arrival: Montalcino (Fortezza area)
Length: approximately 28 km (“Short” variant of the Marathon route)
Positive altitude difference: +820 metres
Difficulty: technical / Medium-High
The main stops: Montalcino > Passo del Lume Spento > Località Sesta > Castelnuovo dell’Abate > Abbey of Sant’Antimo > Montalcino.
What to expect: This itinerary leaves the main roads and enters single-track, farm roads and headlands. The surface varies from packed earth to loose gravel. The track reaches the highest point at Passo del Lume Spento (about 600 m above sea level) and then swoops down towards the magnificent Romanesque Abbey of Sant’Antimo. Please note: the ascent from Sant’Antimo to Montalcino is a real test for the legs, with constant slopes and uneven surfaces.
Type: cycle tourism, E-Bike (pedal assisted), Trekking Bike
Surface: secondary asphalt and easy dirt road (or mixed surface)
Departure and arrival: Montalcino
Length: Approximately 55 km
Positive altitude difference: +780 metres
Difficulty: tourist (Easy with E-Bike, Medium with classic bike)
The classic itinerary par excellence, ideal if you rent an E-Bike (pedal assistance). It develops mainly on secondary asphalted roads with very low vehicular traffic and short stretches of easy dirt road.
The main stops: Montalcino > San Quirico d’Orcia > Pienza > Bagno Vignoni > Montalcino.
What to expect: It is the photographic journey par excellence. Leaving Montalcino you descend gently towards the SS2 Cassia and then deviate towards San Quirico d’Orcia. From here we continue on the hilly ridge up to Pienza (the ideal city of the Renaissance). On the way back, it is worth making a stop in Bagno Vignoni to admire the ancient Piazza delle Sorgenti. The average gradient of the climbs is gentle (around 4-5%), making the itinerary perfect for a day of relaxed cycle tourism.
